What to Expect

General Screen Visits

Thank you for your interest in our current research! Our screening visits will help us determine if any of our currently enrolling studies will be a good fit for you. Please review what to expect at the visit and if you have any questions contact us at 617-732-8201.

  • Screening visit will take approximately2 hours
  • Your visit will begin by completing your medical history forms. Forms can also be completed prior to your appointment by, CLICKING HERE.
  • Our staff will review your detailed medical history and perform a breathing test, called a spirometry test. This test allows us to measure your lung function and can also be used to diagnose and monitor your asthma. Spirometry is performed by taking a deep breath in, as instructed by the technician, and then blowing out as hard and as fast as you possibly can into our machine. You may also be asked to inhale an asthma rescue medication, called Albuterol, that will open your airways, wait 15 to 30 minutes, and repeat the breathing test.
  • You will be compensated between $25 and $50 for this screening visit. We will also provide you with a parking voucher for the BWH garage.

A few visit reminders:

DO NOT have any caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, etc.) for 8 hours prior to your appointment.
DO NOT use your rescue inhaler for 6 hours prior to your visit.
**If you feel the need to use your rescue inhaler, you can go ahead, but please call us, as we may need to reschedule the appointment.
